Meat Lovers Rejoice! While we can’t sit down in a gorgeous dining room tucking in to a bone-in prime rib while glugging Claret we can order some of the country’s finest meat to enjoy in our own home. Here is the best of the best…
Blacklock at Home
It’s the restaurant I’m missing most so a Blacklock at home meat box was always going to make me happy. A bit tricky to get hold of as they’re so popular – you’ll need to go on the website at 10am on Mondays – but it’s worth it. A load of Warrens butchers’ finest skinny chops, some larger Sunday roast style cuts and the all-important, not so secret, recipe for Blacklock’s white chocolate cheesecake.
Feed Britain X Ginger Pig
Created in the face of a pandemic, healthy fast food chain, Leon, came up with Feed Britain – curated food boxes ranging from their own menu highlights to fresh produce from struggling suppliers to meat boxes from Ginger Pig. What’s great with this one is the variety. £55 gets you rump steak, diced chuck steak, pork chops, beef burgers, smoked streaky bacon and Ginger Pig sausages. Sausages. Mmmmmm.
Flank X Jones the Butchers
I first tried Tom Griffiths’ food at his restaurant counter in Spitalfields. We feasted on rump cap, aged duck and mashed potato in puddles of meat gravy. This guy knows his meat and has teamed up with Jones the Butchers to create Basic (£25), Supreme (£42) and Deluxe (£67) meat boxes. What’s nifty here is the recipe card. So, you can simply roast, grill and fry your meat OR how about bavette with chimichurri sauce and crushed crispy potatoes, low and slow glazed Korean BBQ short ribs or slow cooked crackling pork with sweet and sour hispi cabbage? YUM.
Marylebone-favourite, Lurra, has done what most have had to do and started serving takeaway. If you know and love the Galician meat that owner, Nemanja, expertly sources, then their new BBQ boxes will tickle your pickle. Box 1 (£50) gets you 400g sirloin and 4 Galician Blond burgers with brioche buns (oh boy, that fat!) or you can go all out with Box 3 (£150) with 2 Galician Blond bone-in beef ribs and fillet, 5J Presa ibérica and 8 burgers. This meat is not be missed.
On the Pass by Warrens
Cornish butchers, Warrens, is hands down one of the best. With restaurant orders halting during COVID-19 they’ve launched On the Pass, which showcases meat that would have gone to places like The Ledbury and Casamia. You can also get your hands on exquisite burger mince, Cornish lamb cutlets, dry cured smoked bacon, outstanding rib eyes and Olde Cornish sausages, all delivered nationwide.
Wright Bros at Home
Yeah, yeah, I know it’s not meat but if your cholesterol could do with a break then seafood experts Wright Bros are now delivering to you, not just restaurants. The quality and thoroughly decent pricing means you can tuck into dover sole, monkfish tails, whole dressed crabs and oysters even on a furlough budget.
