Haagen-Dazs Free Cone Day lands on Tuesday, May 8 (5/8/2018). Customers can get a free mini cone from 4 to 8 p.m.

Has it been a while since you’ve had some Haagen-Dazs?

On Tuesday, May 8, you won’t have to pay (money) for the blood sugar spike.

That’s when the ice cream chain’s Free Cone Day returns. From 4 to 8 p.m., customers can show up at any Haagen-Dazs shop for a free mini cone.

While you eat this free ice cream, Haagen-Dazs would like you to think about bees.

That’s because Haagen-Dazs is again dedicating Free Cone Day to honeybees and to spreading awareness about the diminishment of their numbers.

The company notes that many of its flavors — like pineapple coconut, rocky road, toasted coconut, strawberry and vanilla Swiss almond — are dependent upon pollination by bees. The chain says that it has donated $1 million to “pollinator education and research.”

Despite its seemingly European-sounding name — which isn’t anyone’s family name and was simply concocted out of the blue by owner Reuben Mattus — Haagen-Dazs debuted in the Bronx in 1961.

At first, the ice cream store sold just three flavors — vanilla, chocolate and coffee. Strawberry was added in 1966.

In keeping with industry trends, the ice cream company is phasing out genetically modified ingredients. Current non-GMO flavors are strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, vanilla bean, rum raisin, pineapple coconut, chocolate chocolate chip, coffee and chocolate peanut butter.

Offering its own take on the dairy-free trend, Haagen-Dazs also recently came out with nondairy ice cream that uses ingredients like coconut cream, peanut oil and pectin instead of traditional milk alternatives (including almond and soy milk, though the products aren’t free of soy).
